I am following up on the email announcement from the Rutgers Office of Information Technology (OIT) about the requirement to use two-step login with Duo.  As the OIT announcement indicates, you do not need to take action right away, but you may want to learn about two-step login by reviewing the information available at twostep.rutgers.edu. For those who are not familiar with Duo, the videos are a good starting point.  

Here’s the key information about the changes outlined in the OIT announcement:

  • If you have previously used two-step login with Duo (or if you currently use Duo), you will need to start using Duo with Rutgers Connect in December.
  • If you have not signed up for Duo previously, then you won’t need to start using Duo until early next year.

At this time, New Brunswick IT Services (NB-ITS) is recommending that everyone enroll for Duo and opt-in for all Rutgers services for use with Duo.

 Why is NB-ITS recommending this?

The Rutgers-wide OIT led initiative is requiring use of Duo with Connect, but for a better security posture, all Rutgers services should be protected with Duo.  Also if you do need help with Duo enrollment it is advisable to do this before it becomes a requirement and as a result the Help Desk might be inundated due to everyone calling at once.  For more details, you can also review our presentation on Multi-Factor Authentication using Duo: https://its.rutgers.edu/secured/nb-its-quick-updates-10212020

 How do I activate two-step login with Duo and opt-in?

If you aren’t yet using two-step login with Duo, you will need to visit the two-step login site, click the “enroll now” button, and follow the enrollment process.  The recommended and preferred method of utilizing Duo is with your smartphone. If you choose to use this, enrollment can be completed remotely. If you do not wish to use your smartphone, please contact us and we can provide a separate device called a token for you to use instead.  Once you’re enrolled, please follow these instructions for “Opting in to two-step login.” This will ensure that all access to your NetID services will be fully protected by two-step login.

 Please note: Opting in is a separate step from enrollment. Even if you are already using Duo for some services, you should make sure that you have opted in fully.

 What happens with usage of Duo with Connect?

If you enroll in Duo before December 16, 2020, you will be required to use Duo with Connect on December 16, 2020.  If you enroll after, you will be required to use Duo with Connect upon enrollment.  On February 3, 2021 usage of Duo with Connect will be required.
